O@tNetflix: Squid Game

Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes.

Yeah, hubby and me joined in the global Squid hype, too. Because it’s great. Without any spoilers or explainifications I’ll try to tell you why this series is such a phenomenon. The recipe for Squid Game’s success is really quite simple: Clever writing, adequate production, super acting, good pace, visionary camera work and lighting and – most important – the Korean film makers didn’t fall in any SJW, cancel culture, third-wave feminazi traps but strictly focused on telling a gripping story which touches more aspects than you’d think at first. It’s not just blood and gore but also a social commentary on the harsh reality of living in the South Korean society (which is, as you know, modeled after the American way of life, not a traditional Asian society) and people so deeply stricken in financial and societary shit they agree to participate in these deadly games.

So last night we watched the first episode of this 9-part mini series. And for tonight we’ve planned to binge at least 2 more episodes. They are each ~1 hour long and not an easy view. Some concentration is required. Also … blink and you miss something. 😉 So more than 2 episodes in succession, well, we’re probably too old for such shenanigans. 😐

Jeremy and his dad binged it all!

Frens, you know that Orca is a huge fan of the Asian, mostly Korean, cinema. They don’t care about your silly resentiments and politics and think about the poor children PG-13 attitude, they just go to town with gut-spilling [sic!] clarity and consequence. When the rules state that losers will be eliminated they mean exactly that. 😮 That’s why most westernized remakes of Japanese and Korean movies suck so badly.

Half of the contestants are already dead, they just don’t know it.

Any of you guys watched it already? How many episodes are you in yet? Will it get less deadly than epi 1?

No Netflix account and still wanna watch the Squid Game?

  1. I’ve watched 3 episodes so I am hooked. Another similar show that is supposed to be good is Alice in Borderland. Guess I will watch that one next if my gore tolerance can stomach it, lol.

    • We’ve watched Alice in Borderland a year or two ago. No comparison. Not as half as gory or brutal or consequential. It’s the diff between Korean and Japanese visual storytelling. Not saying Alice was bad, really not but it was more soapie and human drama … and much slower.

  2. Orcsie i couldnt agree less with your opinion, i watched it because it is super hyped in my country,
It is predictable to the core, full of moral platitudes, cliches and stereotypes. and lets face it, a lot bad actors (who die all very quick, who would have guessed)

Its point is only the soft splatter, what i can enjoy actually.
On top a meaningless story. They tried to give characters some kind of a character, but it failed bad.
I wont tell details, dont want to spoiler Traps 🙂

    • Hey ho Silberli! 🙂

And again I need to ask for clarification: Squid or Alice? Because with Alice I could almost agree with you. Bad acting is maybe a thing in Asia? They are hamming it up to the extreme. 😉 It’s long ago we watched Alice, I really have no idea if it had any message at all.

And Squid Games, well we’ve only watched the first two episodes yet and … OMfG the second was laaame! 😮 And then it dawned on me. Didn’t they say something about 6 games? But the series has 9 episodes, so it’s maybe always one game/murder show, followed by a drama/reflection episode or sumfink? Have we been tricked/lured into Squid Games by starting ultra brutal with killling off more than half of the contestants … only to take the foot off the accelerator in the following episodes?

I always watch Asian media with the semi-conscious view of a semi-educated hobby-anthropologist. So it’s always at least interesting, even if it’s bad.

Hey, how you doin’? Found a new home on the grid after Triumphal was taken over or you a homeless bum now?

    • I remembered the name Froog, new it wasn’t far off Triumphal but had to look it up in SL maps. Looks like a grand place to live and sail from. And, yes, my life is great … or will be once I get Oubaas back from the workshop. In anyway is my life great enough to stay always busy and never even finding the time and motivation to log in world. 🙂
But I love the fact that you’re still inworld, and even often enough to rent a home. Imma gonna visit you when I’m online …
