Ubuntu 21.04 “Hirsute Hippo” Review – Why did they even bother?

Haha! Watch this video review by Jay LaCroix and you’ll know why Orca doesn’t use Ubuntu or any of its forks and flavours.

Particularly the Gnome desktop is a regular pain. I can’t understand why people not only tolerating this shit but are really fond of it. 😮 The (highly paid) devs come up with “Desktop Extensions” that are long established functionalities in every other Linux desktop. But even Ubuntu fanboy Jay asks us and himself in all earnesty “Why did they even bother?” I even think this is like comparing Intel processors vs AMD Ryzen processors, they don’t even play in the same league anymore. Still Intel fanboyz tell you about every little progress Intel makes, even if AMD is so far ahead Intel’s babysteps can never reach their competition.

And the worst thing about it is that Gnome already had all the luxuries and good stuffz. Best examples are Cinnamon and Mate desktops. One being a backward enineered Gnome3, the other a highly customized Gnome2. In between those two environments a user will find everything they ever wanted. Even Ubuntu was already miles ahead, their Unity desktop was much more modern and better equipped than their new standard desktop, Gnome. Even the new version, Gnome40, is miles behind nearly all other desktops.

And Ubuntu as a whole? Asking me, I’d say forget this shit, and forget that it is the most used Linux distro in the world. Most users are either forced to use Ubu for their job, or they are such consumers, for them Ubuntu = Linux and they don’t even know there are other, better distros available. You wanna be one of them sheeples?

No? Cool. 🙂

  1. Even the release note mentions Microsoft several times. Hence my looking to hop from Mint, even if it’s just to LMDE for a while. Still using Manjaro, which is a,step in the right direction. Anything Buntu based is just not for me anymore.

Congratz on you declaration of independence, Neil. 🙂 We have to forgive Mark Shuttleworth for becoming more and more Microsoft’s bitch. Really, I guess it behoofs the Linux distro #1 to be bought out by software house #1. In Mark’s place I’d be so deep in MS’s @$$, you couldn’t get me out with a normal recovery vehicle. I completely understand him. That doesn’t mean we, as end-users, have to follow his example or do we?

I also understand your hesitation of going to Arch. It surely is an aquired taste. So for an ex-Buntu all things Debian are the next logical step. In my short review I really loved Sparky the most. But if you’re a fan of Mint I guess LMDE is the closest in getting kinda the same experience. Or why not try the global #1 Linux distro (according to DistroWatch) and go with MX? No matter that one single German bish doesn’t like it (Xfce desktop), I’m hearing they have many clever little helpers and problem solvers onboard. Worth a shot in any case.

  2. Funnily I downloaded it yesterday, it’s the next distro I’m going to try. I never liked xfce either but will give it a try. Debian is just always so far behind on most of its software. So much choice so little knowledge, so easily distracted. To many computers. Lol. No wonder I have so many unfinished projects.

    • Gud boiiii, very gud boiiii! 🙂
I only once installed Ubuntu Mate, which was said to be better than Mint Mate but turned out to be vomit-green … and I was already a Manjaro fraggle at the time, so no chance for that shit anyway. 😐

So, what are you sporting these days FOTOROTO?

            • Distro hopping an e-sports discipline now? Install as many distros in 1 or 2 hours as possible? Or more like a marathon, whoever installed the most distros over the span of 1 year is the champion?
Do you have to live in it or is installation, 5 mins of snooping around and a remembrance photo from Second Life good enough?

No, honest, why Garuda? It’s Arch in its base but not philosophically. Totally bloated with needless shit. So there. No need to hop to that one.

                • Can’t say anything about OS-X since we got rid of our iMac in 2004 or 5 or so. But no, Garuda is Arch = too clever and too high above Apple users’ heads. Give ’em Mint or something like that and they’ll be instantly and eternally happy penguins.
