Windsurfing Race Day 2 with Sea Boss Rider at Saint Aubrey in 2022

Amy, Sanja, Lucy, Izi and Ella joined me yesterday on our windsurfing course 5 with wind from South East and21knots. The crossings were actually smooth. Just 2 disconnects happened. Izi got disconnected at the start and sailed far behind all after she came back. I didnt see that early enough to call a restart. And Amy just before the finish line. Her board tried to finish on her own, hit the southern race line buoy on the wrong side and missed the line. Amy couldnt find her board after coming back and I decided to count her for the race as if the board would have crossed the race line on its own as 4th.

We all started within 10sec and Amy with a perfect start at 00:00. Sanja had the best speed and line and passed Amy short after the line and was quickly a little ahead.

I thought i found a great speed and line as i caught up with Amy on the first leg to buoy CN, but Ella was even better and caught up with us two. Lucy followed us in popcorn distance.

short after the start

Sanja arrived first at buoy CN and started first the high speed leg to buoy ON. Amy, Ella and me arrived nearly parallel at buoy CN. Amy turned around buoy CN a little wider and slower than Ella and me. On the high speed legs from buoy CN to buoy ON and back to buoy CS Ella and i sailed side by side and it seemed as if we catch up a little with Sanja. Lucy caught up slowly with Amy.

The leg from buoy CS via Degrand island to buoy OW is a long downwind leg with at least 2 gibes. Sanja gibed differently than all others and a bit earlier. She didnt do a big mistake during the gibes and could keep her speed very high. That let her defend her lead. I started the downwind a bit before Ella but she stroke back on the downwind leg and caught up again. Amy defended her lead bravely against Lucy.

short before buoy OW

Sanja arrived first at buoy OW and started the mixed upwind and high speed leg to buoy IN around Degrand island first. To make it short she defended her lead bravely into the finish with changing lead distances. Sometimes it seemed Ella and i can catch up with Sanja, but then she found a bit more speed again and increased the difference again. My upwind tack after buoy OW was a bit too late like some other tacks yesterday as well and Ella could sail away from me.

On the long upwind leg to buoy CS Sanja, Ella and me tacked differently again and we crossed our lines several times. It seemed that Ella and i could catch up with Sanja.

Just before the last tack to buoy CS Ella and i were on collision course after i could decrease the distance to her. Now i had to decide to tack a bit before her and sail to buoy CS with a closer angle to the wind or sail around her back with a better angle to the wind afterwards, because Ella was on starboard tack. I decided i do it before her, but took too long for this decision and my board hit hers parallel at the end of my tack.
In Motocar Racing you would call that just normal race action, but here it was actually my foul. I could have done now a penalty circle and let Ella sail alone in second position to the finish line and still stay in front of Amy and Lucy or keep on going parallel with Ella and give her still an exciting duel. I dont count my rank in the results and so i decided not to do a penalty and sailed the following high speed legs to buoy ON and back to buoy CN side by side with Ella. On the leg to buoy CN i could sail a little closer line and arrived a little earlier at it than Ella. This was the little advantage i defended then into the finish. Amy and Lucy were still in their close duel behind Ella and me.

The finish: 1. Sanja , me
The finish: 2. Ella
The finish: 3. Lucy

Because of the bad luck of Amy Lucy could grab the 3rd place and see on the next picture Amy’s board aiming for the finish line. Thats why i count her 4th.

The finish: 4. Amy’s board
The finish: 5. Izi

Congrats to Sanja for her win, to Ella for giving me a great duel, to Amy and Lucy for the same great duel and finally to Izi for not leaving the race after her really bad luck at the start.
