Windsurfing Race Day 46 with Sea Boss Rider at Saint Aubrey yesterday

Yesterday Sanja, Ester, Amy, Ella and Izi came for our windsurfing courses 1 and 2 with wind from North and 25knots. I am taking a break from sailing this week and will join in next week again. The weather was fine. Only Sanja crashed in second race in the last quarter after hitting a sim corner.

Sanja, Ester, Amy, Ella and Izi at the briefing

All 5 started nearly as close as always on these high speed courses within 5sec.

The start of first race

Sanja took the lead with Izi in her neck and followed by Amy, Ella and Ester. At the first mark Izi found a mouse hole to cut the turn, while Sanja and Ester went wide.

This awesome turn gave Izi the lead. Amy and Ella passed Sanja with their better turn as well, but on the following high speed leg Sanja came back and passed the two again.

at buoy OE

Amy went a bit wide around buoy OE and fell back to the end of the fleet.

End of first lap: 1. Izi, 2. Sanja, 3. Ella, 4. Ester
End of first lap: 5. Amy

The order after finishing the first lap stayed all the way through lap 2. They all sailed at full speed and only little speed differences here and there changed the distances between the sailors.

second time at buoy CN

Ester caught up a little with Ella on the high speed leg between buoy CN and OE.

Congrats to Izi for her win of the first race.

Ester was a bit early on the best way to the line and tried to avoid to be over early by going a bit more South. She saved her start of 00:00, but was now on the little slower line to the first buoy.

Start of the second race

This gave Sanja, Izi, Amy and Ella the chance to pass Ester on the way to buoy CS. Izi had the best speed and passed Sanja on the way to bouy CS.

They reached in the same order buoy IS.

On the very long high speed leg to buoy OE via CN Izi, Sanja, Ella and Amy spead out a bit and were looking all for the fastest line to buoy OE followed by Ester.

the high speed leg to buoy OE

Sanja found the fastest line and reached buoy OE a little before Izi. The two turned around OE quite wide board at board and Sanja left enough room for Izi to the buoy.
On this turn Izi was first on leeward, so Sanja had to give her room and to sail around her, but from the moment they both crossed the North-South line the leeward changed and now Sanja could force Izi to turn more narrow. This happened with both boards parallel and nearly all the time with light touching, but to say one fouled the other during this would have been a much too hard decision and because no one of them had a real advantage from this situation i decided to let both continue.

at buoy OE

Sanja got caught by lag after the turn and Izi, Ella and Amy could pass her. But the fast blonde from the Northern Germany took the boom between her teeth and caught up again with Ella and Amy at buoy CN.

On the following upwind leg to buoy ON Izi defended her lead against Sanja, Ester and Ella sailed nearly the whole time parallel and Amy messed up a bit with her upwind tack and fell back to the end of the fleet.

After buoy ON the downwind leg to the dangerous sim corner of the airport sim starts. Izi and Sanja gibed a little different, but reached that dangerous corner close together. Izi cut the corner and came luckily through. Sanja was too close to the corner and crashed unfortunately.
No Guts – No Glory!
Ella found a better line on the downwind leg than Ester and could sail away from her.

Congrats to Izi for her win of the second race as well.
We had more exciting duels in the past and because we lost yesterday some of our regularly sailors to RL the order during the race was quite early found.
But for me from the outside it was exciting to see what they all tried to catch up with the one in front and to defend the lead against the one behind them. Well done everyone.

    • we cant have every week the maximum of sailors and that is ok…

I have never thought that our races at Saint Aubrey would have become such a nice success. So i am very satisfied with what happened this year there

  1. It’s not clear from the video, but at OE I was unable to turn quick enough inside Sanja’s line across my bow, and what you call ‘light touching’ was actually Sanja’s board pushing mine around the buoy, even before we gybed. Our boards were even stuck together for a few seconds after the buoy. That’s why I questioned your decision, Bianca. Still, we were both able to carry on after this short cuddle, so no harm done. πŸ™‚

    • Yes Izi and we will have these “little bumps” more often the closer we all get. And i really tend to call this race action. I know its a very small edge between following too detailed the rules and have a relaxed race and i try my best to decide it for all fair and best.
And yes i can do only 7sec videos. So its luck that i start it at the right moment to catch an action i don’t know if or when it will happen…

More important for me is we can avoid the heavy bumps, when some one runs into another one and one or both get stopped. But since a couple of weeks now we had not have those anymore and i am actually glad it went this way.
