Windsurfing Race Day 44 with Sea Boss Rider at Saint Aubrey yesterday

Sanja, Lisa, Lucy, Izi, Ella, and Orsii joined me yesterday on our reversed courses 1 and 2 with wind from the South and 25knots.
Pure sunshine, not a single cloud. Conditions i would love to have every day and everywhere over SL.
Lisa joined us yesterday the first time and Orsii came back after a long break.

the fleet at the briefing

The first race yesterday on our reversed triangle high speed course 1 with 2 laps was just unbelievable.

A good lap time on this course is when you reach the 5:00min. Yesterday 6 of the 7 sailors did 12 laps under 5min.-Unbelievable.

And the first 6 sailors finished within 7seconds. Guess what? UNBELIEVABLE

The start: The whole fleet started within 9sec with Sanja, Izi, Ella and me in front and Orsii, Lisa and Lucy just a blink behind.

Ella, Sanja and me leading the fleet on the first leg

Orsii fell slowly back after her long break and only one day of practice again. But she sailed bravely, tried to remember all the things from months ago and finished with the applause of all last. But i am very sure with some more practice the next days and the help from us all she will remember all again very soon.

The first 6 arrived the first buoy OE close together and started the long high speed leg to buoy CN and grew closer together.

the first 6 on the final leg in lap 1:me, Sanja, Ella, Lisa, Izi and Lucy

The second lap was nearly a copy of the first lap. Only Lucy passed Lisa and Izi passed Ella

the first 6 on the final leg in lap 2:me, Sanja, Izi, Ella, Lucy and Lisa

And as i already mentioned. The finish was unbelievable: me, 1. Sanja, 2.Izi, 3. Ella, 4. Lucy, 5. Lisa

and 6. Orsii

If you dont believe it scroll down for the results of race 1. Ok one has to get the congrats for the win and that is Sanja, but they all deserve it actually. Just a little mistake and the order could have been mixed totally.

Star of race 2: Izi and Ella were just a blink or two over early and had to start again in race 2. So Lisa, Sanja, Orsii, Lucy and me started close together the first leg to buoy OE. I could catch up with Lisa and Sanja and Lucy passed Orsii. On the following downwind to buoy ON and the turn around buoy ON Sanja and i could sail a bit away from Lisa. Lucy caught up with Lisa. Izi and Ella caught up with Orsii after their restart and passed her.

me, Sanja, Lisa and Lucy on the upwind leg to buoy CN

After buoy ON the upwind leg to buoy CN showed 3 exciting close duels. Sanja and me for the lead. Lucy and Lisa for third place and Izi and Ella for fifth place.

Sanja and me parallel to buoy CN

I am sure Sanja was wondering why i tacked so late to buoy CN. Well the upload of the picture took some time and i had to wait for that until i got the control back. But it didn’t change anything in our duel. We had only a couple of meters distance between us and this all the way into the finish via buoy OE, IS and CS and in the end i could save just 1second.

the leg between buoy IS and CS

The same happened with the other two duels. Lisa and Lucy finished within 4seconds and Izi and Ella within 3seconds.

Congrats again to Sanja for her win.

The finish: 2. Lisa, 3. Lucy
The finish: 4. Izi, 5. Ella
The finish: 6. Orsii

The Sea Boss Rider windsurfer from the mesh shop is an exciting little thing. But has as most boats from there some bugs which were never fixed or updated. The official manual gives values how to sail the windsurfer, but right from the beginning the official boat HUD shows different and wrong values for awa. The wind compass from Kim shows the right values and that was the reason why i asked Kim if she could make a Info text placed somewhere in the windsurfer. It took her 2 days and she sent me a beta version to test.

the beta version of Kim’s info text

This text shows the right values for AWA and additional the sheet angle. This will help all racers to sail even closer together in the future.
And a second advantage is that the text is a lot faster than the original old schooled texture HUD that shows only grey squares with some lag.
Kim told me she will update the Sea Boss Rider part in the wind compass as well. So i guess she will add there the sheet angle as well. When both will be hopefully launched soon you can decide which one you wanna use.
For me this info text is an awesome improvement for the Sea Boss Rider and really worth to have it and our racers asked me already several times when it will be launched.

Stay all safe and healthy and hope to see you all back next week on our courses 4 and 3 with wind from NE and 25knots.

  1. Thanks for hosting again Bianca, and for your awesome reports. That first race was incredibly close! Sanja managed to get past me with just a few metres left – I was a little too far leeward on that last leg and had to head up a bit near the line.

One point about your pic of Kim’s beta text info HUD. It’s showing AWA 53 degrees and sheet angle 21. With those values, I would expect the text to be green (ok) or even light blue (too tight), but certainly not yellow (too loose). I don’t believe that the SBR needs lower AWA/sheet ratios than most other sailboats – my own optimum sheet angles suggest that it’s similar to the IF and Nacra. But the new HUD seems to be saying something different in your pic. What’s going on there?

  2. Hello,
i agree on that observation, izi. The trim colors come from the board itself and are catched by the Info Hud the same way as the board Hud does, There is no additional processing for this in the Info Hud. I also noticed Yellow sometimes briefly pushes through when the sheet is initially trimmed by the arrow down key. Maybe this picture was taken at that moment. But i will keep an eye on that and i’m sure, Bianca does too.

    • my observations with the original HUD and with Kims info text. The color changes are about the same. Only the original HUD is slower when you have lag, because the textures change slower and it gets confused more easily and you have to wait for the next crossing mostly until it will be right again

      1. using arrow up or down is a combination of turning the windsurfer and moving the sails parallel. It seems that the turning and adjusting sail don’t match with each others and thats why the color changes to blue or yellow depending on which turn you do
      2. When you use the arrow left or right to do a “carved gibe” the sail (sheet value) wont change and when the sail changes to the other side color changes to blue if you dont adjust the sails parallel -> same with sailboats
      3. the color changes when you gain speed or loose speed, because awa changes.-> same on sailboats
      4. when the text color changes the windsurfer changes course automatically a bit and slows down-> i only noticed that a sailboat slows down
