Race Day 42 with Bandit 22LTE at Saint Aubrey

Izi, Ella, Lucy, Nicci, Sea, Erica, Lisa, Aymalie, Moon, Cilian and Rugger (with crew Posh) came yesterday for our reversed course 1 and wind from South West and 21knots.
The whole area was fresh after the rolling restarts on the Main Channel, but we had some lag on different crossings. Unfortunately we lost Aymalie before she could cross the start line by probably disconnect as it seemed and Lisa by pulled off her boat during a crossing in second half of the race and without a chance to get back on her boat again.

The Start was one of the closest and best we had so far. 9 Racers started spread out over the line within 8sec and only Erica started just some seconds later. They sailed straight to the West with wind from South West and when you watch Noe’s video you can see how the wind shadow influences some of the boats and see the position changes along the first leg. Lucy in the middle of the fleet with her nearly perfect start made the best out of it and took quick the lead, while the others were trying to find their positions. Izi did best in the group of Lucy’s chasers on the way to the first buoy CS.

The Start from my point of view

Izi passed Lucy with a better turn at buoy CS. You can see that we had lots of lag around buoy CS. Nearly all boats were flying. On my viewer it looked quite similar. But it seemed that all gave enough room while they sailed around Buoy CS.

Moon and Lisa found the fastest line on the second leg and passed Lucy, while Izi increased her lead a bit. Behind the first 4 sailors the others found their positions slowly for the the next upwind leg to buoy IS.

On the upwind leg to buoy IS Moon started to sail away of the fleet and chased Izi, Ella and Lucy passed Lisa again and Erica chose a more northern route, which looks first faster, but only until you have to tack south to buoy IS again and loose all the advantage again.

On the following short downwind leg to buoy OW some dueling groups found together. Moon chasing the still leading Izi, Ella, Lucy and Lisa in first chasers group, Nicci and Cilian in second group and Sea, Erica and Rugger in the third group.

Lisa could pass Lucy around buoy OW again.
After buoy OW the long high speed part started. First with code until you reach the south west corner of Degrand island and then all the way to buoy ON with spin.

Izi safely in the lead on the fast downwind leg (video by Noe)

Izi reached buoy ON first followed by Moon. Ella could sail a bit away from Lucy and Lisa and started to chase Moon.
You can see the moment Lisa was pulled off her boat and it went straight to North East while Lucy gibed for buoy ON.
Nicci and Cilian still have their exciting close duel while reaching buoy ON.

The following long upwind to buoy CN gives you many options for your strategy. You can go all the way south first and then tack directly to the west for buoy CN like Izi and Moon did or tack earlier and aim for buoy CN from the North like Ella and Lucy did.

While Izi, Moon, Ella and Lucy were already on the downwind leg to buoy OE, Nicci, Cilian, Sea, Erica and Rugger reached buoy CN.

Izi was safely in front and it didn’t look as if she was willing to make a mistake to let Moon catch her. But you can see as well that Moon looked very safe on his second place and i bet he didn’t believe that Ella would find her turbo and started really to catch up with him 2 buoys later. Cillian passed Nicci on the way to buoy OE again.

At buoy OE you come from the “high speed spin leg” and change to the slow “jib leg”. The next buoy CS has a more southern position and so it is best to take the speed from the downwind leg into the upwind leg south.
The better you do the turn the more you can win and sail more south with higher speed. See the different moments the sailors tacked after buoy OE and you can imagine who took most speed to the south.

On the upwind leg to buoy CS you pass the finish line quite close, but because it registers the the boats in both directions on course 1 you are not allowed to cross it already now.
You can see the different lines and strategies of the sailors on the upwind leg to buoy CS.

Part 2: upwind leg to buoy CS (video by Noe)

Izi sailed around the last buoy CS first and started the final downwind leg to the finish. I bet she had a big smile on her face and crossed toes for SL to let her win.
But in the end of the video you can imagine how successful Ella’s chase of Moon was. She turned around buoy CS closer and in front of Moon, but he could pass her Moon the inside again and now the two started an exciting final downwind duel.

The Finish: 9. Erica

Congrats to Izi for her win, to Ella for her exciting chase of Moon and all others for exciting and fair duels.

My hero of yesterday is Izi: Izi is a very experienced sailor and she raced quite a lot in the last years. But she got this boat about 2 weeks ago and she learned it awesomely fast with the help of our sailors at Saint Aubrey. Thank you to all her supporters and welcome another speed queen in our fleet.

  1. My video of yesterday, showing how I was easily caught by Izi, Moon and Lisa after a great start by me πŸ˜‰

Also, a great duel among Lisa and Ella, before we lost Lisa, and the great duel Moon X Ella at the final leg πŸ™‚

    • Lucy,
your videos are an awesome addition to Noe’s videos. We can see the different strategies and the different techniques during the turns on Noe’s videos and the exciting dynamic view of the sailor her-/himself in your video.

I really love for you to have a “boring” race in front, but i love you to sail in the middle of the fleet as well…

Thank you so much for adding this here

  2. Thank you Bianca, Noelita and Lucy, for your brilliant race directing, reporting, photos and videos! All you do adds to the sailing itself to make it a such a friendly and fun experience for us.

And another big THANK YOU to all my friends at Saint Aubrey for your lovely surprise gift of this super little yacht for my 15th Rez Day on 22nd October, and helping me to learn to sail her.

    Snuggly hugs all round!
