Windsurfing Race Day 39 with Sea Boss Rider at Saint Aubrey yesterday

Sanja, Izi, Amy, Ella, Ester and Lucy joined me yesterday on our high speed courses 1 ad 2 with wind from North and 25knots. Yesterday the SL disconnect lottery machine found me in the second race. All others finished both races.

Izi, Sanja, Amy, Ella and me started within 4sec and only Lucy followed some seconds later. The group was on full speed and stayed that close together until the first buoy CN.

You see the first 6 arriving close together at buoy CN and can watch the different skills of the turns. Sanja and Ella did the best turns and sailed a little bit away. We 4 others tried to get through the one person gate and slowed down a bit.

On the following high speed part to buoy OE Sanja and Ella had their duel for the lead and we 4 others tried to find the highest speeds on our lines to the buoy OE.

Lucy caught up with the fleet again. Sanja and Ella turned around buoy OE first and we others grew closer together during that turn again (shame that SL wasn’t fast enough to show the sailors after the next crossing).

The final leg in the first lap ended a bit unfortunate for Ella. Sanja in leeward aimed to the very north corner of the race line. Ella didnt barge Sanja and the result was that she missed the line. She had to go back and cross it properly. You saw how close the race was so far and this meant that Ella fell back to last place without a chance to catch up much again.
When Ella noticed that she missed the line she was shocked in the first moment. It seemed as if Sanja didn’t realize that all and tacked right after the line with the result that she sailed over Ellas board. This was actually a foul caused by the already a little too aggressive action before. If i would have seen this already yesterday i would have reacted in the race.
I talked with Sanja afterwards and she will be a bit more relaxed in the future.

The following two legs to buoy OE via buoy CN let Sanja, Izi and me grow more together, Lucy and Ester had an exciting duel followed by Amy and Ella.

After buoy OE Sanja was in the lead followed by me and Izi, who started her turbo and just passed me some meters before the finish line: 1. Sanja, 2. Izi, me

and followed by the others a little later.

Congrats to Sanja for her win and Izi for her awesome finish.

For the second race we don’t have pictures or videos. The start of the second race was felt even closer than the first one. All 7 sailors started within 7sec and sailed with full speed to buoy IS via buoy CS. At buoy all 7 fitted into a 40m chat ring on the mini map. After the turn around buoy IS we had the two high speed leg to buoy OE and back to buoy CN and all were still together in the a kind of a double chat ring (less than 80m). I can’t say who was on which rank.
Then the upwind leg to buoy ON followed and the fleet spread a bit. The crossing after the tack to buoy ON was my “Game over”.
After i came back i saw Sanja arriving buoy OE a little bit before Izi and Amy, Ester, Ella and Lucy followed close together nicely lined up.
These girl are already faster than i can fly without my flying saucer. Thats why i could’nt get back in time to take a pic of the photo finish between 1. Sanja and 2. Izi or of 3. Amy, 4. Ella and 5. Ester or of 6. Lucy.

Congrats to Sanja for her second win yesterday and to all others for another exciting race.

  1. A comment about the start/finish line incident…

In my opinion, the end of the start/finish line should be treated as a course ‘mark’, even though there is no buoy there. So if there’s an overlap within the two-boat-length distance, the outer boat MUST give the inner boat room to cross the line, even when the outer boat is the leeward boat. In Sanja’s defence, it can be hard to judge in the heat of the moment whether or not there is an overlap. Best to be on the safe side and leave a bit of space anyway, if someone is that close.

You can see from Noe’s video that Ella tried in the last fraction of a second to bear away and touch the end of the line. I would have given Sanja’s bum a hard nudge a second earlier, but Ella is more polite than me! πŸ™‚

    • i agree with you Izi it should be treated like that but the rule says something different…specially for start and finish line buoys… there is no overlapping rule at the race line buoys (or ends)…
