Race Day 34A with Bandit 22LTE at Saint Aubrey

After the race last week was cancelled because only Lisa could make it online in time we had a great race yesterday again. Lisa, Ella, Lucy, Amy, Erin, Nicci, Erica, Moon, Liev and Myst (with crew Raccheal) came for our normal course and wind from South West and 21 knots. The weather was bright sunny and all finished.

the fleet at the briefing

Nicci, Lisa and Ella were the first at the start line, but Nicci was just a little too early there. She tried all not to cross it too early but a spot of her boat box crossed the line just a bit more than 1sec too early and she had to go back and start again.
The second group included Moon, Erin and Lucy, the third group Amy, Liev and Myst and at the end Erica and Nicci at her second start.

the start

Ella took the advantage out of her great start, took the lead and sailed a bit away from all others free of any wind shadow. Lisa accelerated slowly from the start and Moon, Amy and Erin could pass her until the first buoy CS.

at buoy CS:2. Moon, 3. Amy, 4. Erin, 5. Lucy, 6. Lisa 7. Liev, 8. Myst
at buoy CS: 9. Erica and 10. Nicci

But as a regular reader of this race blog you know the 6. position is nothing that pleases Lisa and she started her chase. Her first “passing victim” was Lucy. Lisa passed Lucy during the lot better tack at buoy CS.

On the following downwind leg to buoy OE Moon and Amy tried to use the wind shadow to catch up with Ella, but Ella defended awesome her lead.

at buoy OE: 1. Ella, 2. Moon, 3. Amy

Lisa sailed a bit away from Lucy and caught up with Erin at buoy OE. And there she she passed Erin with a better tack around buoy OE and started to chase Amy and Moon.

at buoy OE: 4. Erin, 5. Lisa, 6. Lucy

Nicci passed Erica on the leg to buoy OE.

at buoy OE: 7.Myst and 8. Liev and not on the picture 9. Nicci and 10. Erica

Lisa sailed an awesome upwind leg to buoy CN and passed Moon and Amy, who had an exciting duell with each others in the meantime. Amy won this duel with Moon and arrived at buoy CN before Moon.
Lucy caught up slowly meter by meter with Erin and Nicci with Myst and Liev.

The Ella hunters: Lisa, Moon, Amy, Erin and Lucy
at buoy CN: 1. Ella, 2. Lisa, 3. Amy, 4. Moon, 5.Erin and 6. Lucy
at buoy CN: 7. Myst, 8. Liev, 9. Nicci
and 10. Erica

On the downwind leg to buoy ON Ella could defend her lead against Lisa. But Lucy passed Erin and both caught up slowly with Amy and Moon, who were still in their exciting duel.

at buoy ON: 3. Amy, 4. Moon, 5. Lucy and 6. Erin

Nicci caught up a lot with Liev and Myst on the downwind leg to nuoy ON.

7. Myst, 8. Liev and 9. Nicci

The following long upwind leg to Degrand Island saw a lot of actions. Some sailors went first west and a bit later south after buoy ON and some straight South and later west direction Degrand Island.
Amy went first the West and Moon first South and they came together at the point where they had to tack to the west direction Degrand Island again. Amy had the advantage of starboad tack and Moon tried to tack before Amy to get the same tack, but he decided to do that 4 or 5 sec to late and tacked right in front of Amy. She had no chance to avoid the contact, got stopped to nearly Zero and lost about 20m. Because of Moon did this just a bit too late he fouled Amy with this and i had to let him do a 360°, which he did a little later in a safe area.
In the meantime Lisa chose a little different line than Ella to Degrand Island and could pass Ella there with a little earlier tack.

at Degrand Island: 1. Lisa and 2. Ella

During the fight of Amy and Moon and Moon doing his penalty afterwards Lucy and Erin could pass the two and arrived next at Dgrand Island.

at Degrand Island: 3. Lucy, 4. Erin and 5. Amy

Then i had to tell a tourist around there to watch the racers and missed the others at Degrand Island.

Ella could follow Lisa and didnt let her sail much more away.

at buoy IS: 1. Lisa and 2. Ella

Lucay sailed more away from Erin.

at buoy IS: 3. Lucy

After the falling back of Amy she started immediately her chase again and on the way to buoy IS she could pass Erin again.

at buoy IS: 4. Amy and 5. Erin
at buoy IS: 6. Moon
at buoy IS: 7. Myst and 8. Liev

On the following downwind leg to buoy CN and the upwind leg to buoy CS Moon caught up with Erin again and at buoy CS he passed Erin on the inside.
Nicci caught up with Liev and Myst and passed Myst just before buoy CS.

at buoy CS: 5. Moon, 6. Erin, 7. Liev, 8. Nicci and 9. Myst

While i had my eye on the duel of Moon and Erin, Lisa, Ella and Lucy finished and i got there only right in time for Amy’s finish.

  1. 10 boats! Not even during the most active times of the old sailing community did we have such big fleets. Congrats on your well-organized and attended races, Bianca. And I see the grid behaves well. Did LL and Amazon sort it out now?
