Windsurfing Race Day 33 with Sea Boss Rider at Saint Aubrey yesterday

Izi, Sanja, Amy, Ester and Ella joined me yesterday on our new reversed courses 4 and 3 with wind from North East and 25knots.
The weather conditions seemed to be sunny with local clouds and showers. Sanja got turned around in the first race on a crossing right in front of me and that caused a capsize for her and Ella and Sanja got disconnected in the second race. Ella couldnt find her windsurfer again and couldnt return into the race. Sanja found hers fortunately and came back.

The new courses need a different start routine than our other high speed courses, but it seems that some have found already their good routine with some training during the week.
Sanja, Ester, Izi and me started best followed a bit later by Ella and at the end Amy.

The Start of Race 1 (video by Hakiria)

I caught up with Izi on the way to buoy IS and she had to give me room crossing her path because i was on leeward. That was the moment i could pass her. But she stayed in my neck all the way to buoy CN.
Ester after her very good start found on the way to buoy IS one of the seagulls, which stopped her for a bit and she fell back.

At buoy CN Izi was a little distracted by whatever and turned first to the wrong side. That gave me a little more distance and i tried to catch up with Sanja. SL helped me to pass Sanja, because on a crossing to buoy IS she got turned around by about 90° without control. That caused a capsize for her. I could pass her and Izi could catch up with her again.
I could sail relaxed safely leading now to the finish line and behind me Izi and Sanja had another exciting duel, which Sanja won by 3sec.
Behind them Amy and Ella had a close duel as well and Amy could manage in this to stay 3sec in front of Ella.
Ester after her seagull accident sailed in the popcorn position and watched all of us.

the final leg and The finish: me, 1. Sanja, 2. Izi, 3. Amy, 4. Ella, 5. Ester

Without the SL interference i am sure i wouldn’t have passed Sanja and i am not sure if i could have stayed in front of if she hadn’t done her little detour.
So congrats to Sanja for her win of race 1.

The upwind start of race 2 is a bit tricky with wind North East, because you need to tack to buoy ON very quick after the start line.
Sanja, Ella, Amy, Ester and Izi crossed the start line all in front of me, but the more South you cross the start line the more way you have to sail to buoy ON afterwards. I could pass Ella, Amy and Ester already on the first tack, because of my better position on the start line. Sanja and Izi were in the lead right from the beginning.

Somewhere around buoy ON Ella and Sanja got disconnected and only Sanja could continue the race a lot behind all others.
At buoy ON you have two options. You can sail first west and then gybe south to buoy CN or go first south and gybe then to the west.
Because we reach ON with lower speed from the upwind leg i thought i could try the southern line first and might catch up with Izi at buoy CN, but it didnt work. Amy and Ester trusted me and thought because of i designed the courses i know the best way. But well after i tested the courses i haven’t practiced much on them and Izi was now on the best line to buoy CN, far and safe in the lead.
Amy and Ester stayed close in my neck.

The rest of the race looked maybe a bit boring from the outside, but wasn’t boring for the sailors at all, because they all tried their best to catch up with the one in front of them, but no one did a big mistake or SL interfered again with technical problems.
There are a lot of situations on the second half of the course 4 you can do mistakes with all the different tacks we need to do. But all kept their position in the race until the finish line.

The sailors and spectators at the watching tower waited for Sanja finishing her race bravely after her crash.

Congrats to Izi for her win in second race.

The new courses need a bit more to let the fleet grow together again like we can see it on our courses 1 and 2, but we are on a good way to see more exciting races on our new courses as well in the next weeks.

Those stupid stupid moles left the seagull non-phantom again? Didn’t we at TrYC ask them for years to please turn the gulls in Coontz to phantom? I guess they eventually did it. But this is now a step back. 😦

And it doesn’t even add to the realism coz 1) waterfowl flees when you get close and 2) they are soft and slippery and won’t stop you dead in your tracks.

I’m sure you could have, if you also managed to avoid the rocks-disguised-as-seagulls.
Mind you, the big herring gulls on the public quay near our marina stare you down as you approach. I can almost see their thoughts “I’m a rufty tufty f…n herring gull, keep away from me, softy human”.

      • The answer from LL about changing out seagulls into phantom:

        Hello Bianca,

Thank you for submitting your support request. I have spoken with the LDPW (Linden Department of Public Works) and we will get these modified to phantom as quickly as possible.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

        Have a wonderful day,
