Relax and Try Linux

Hey guys, this is a link to a nice Linux-frenly article on our fellow Renard’s blog:

Let’s see what Renard has up his sleeve:

  1. Manjaro
  2. Ubuntu Mate
  3. Mint
  4. LMDE
  5. Zorin
  6. Endeavour

There are 2 distros in the list that I don’t really like but that’s only personal taste. And I dunno if Manjaro is particularly good as a starter distro.

Once you have 2 or 3 weeks of experience on Linux you’d say of course and wonder why you ever started out on Ubuntu or Mint or thereabouts. But exactly those 2 or 3 weeks of precious experience you just don’t have when you freshly start out on Linux, all bright tailed and bushy eyed. ๐Ÿ˜‰ So I wouldn’t recommend Manjo for the first contact. Like Endeavour, it’s more like a goal.

Anyhoo, enjoy … and ffs join us on Linux!!! Coz Renard and me, we are really kool kidz! Don’t you wanna be a kool kid?

    • Again, a question of taste and definition of “superb”. I tested Garuda and it was too much, just too much of everything and the kitchen sink. It’s supposed to be Arch, right? In Arch we’re used to populate our lean and empty systems by ourselves, only install what is needed. In Garuda I’d need some hours deleting superfluous bloat before I could work comfortably in it. For people who want all that fluff it’s surely a cool distro.

        • I just checked: 2.2 GB ISO file!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

This download contains everything + the kitchen sink. That’s what is commonly known as bloat. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I prefer to find an empty desktop with nothing but a browser installed. And from there I populate the system myself with just the stuff I need.

  1. I installed the Cinnamon flavored Manjaro on my laptop over the weekend, with the newest kernel even ๐Ÿ™‚ I am happy to have my dark purple mint themes and buttons on there now. I also took the time to clean out the insides of my two PCs. Those fans were looking nasty. Now no more dust bunnies for me, yay.

    • Becca, you are my hero!

Please let us know about your journey in this Arch-like OS and if you encounter many problems in the next couple days/weeks. Hubby and me, we’re both back, not only on Manjaro but on Cinnamon as well. And we love it. On one side the good feeling of being on a fairly new and up-to-date distro, on the other hand the reassuring feeling of being well taken care of. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, kernel 5.13.4-1 runs without any problems on both of our main systems. We didn’t switch to 5.14.RC2 yet, since it says “experimental”. I guess my days as a crash test dummy are over by now so I stuck with the second newest kernel. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And congratz on your spring cleaning attempts. Dust bunnies sound cute and fluffy and sweet but they often bring along the overheating death for your precious hardware. ๐Ÿ˜
