Race 15 with TMS-IMocca60-V2.8 at Saint Aubrey

Daenery, Kim, Sea, Ian (with crew Nochiko) and Juicy came out yesterday to Saint Aubrey for our Offshore course with wind from North East and 18knots.
The weather conditions during the weekend were already very different for most of us. Some had no issues and some had rough conditions. It was a bit the same yesterday. Juicy and Sea crashed and as it seemed by coming too close to a sim cross. The other 3 finished.

Ian, Daenery and Sea started best followed by Kim and Juicy a lttle later (video by Hakiria)

Ian used the best start and reached buoy OE first followed close by Daenery.

The long leg via buoy CS and IS to buoy OW looked mostly like on the following video by Hakiria. It looks quite boring, but when you know the IMocca then you know a little wrong click in the wrong moment and you loose a lot of speed. Daenery tried her best to catch up with Ian who tried the same to stay in front.

See Ian still a little in front of Daenery at Degrand Island

Same situation at the Lighthouse in the west. Ian leading and Daenery follwing close. Behind the two Kim and Sea were having a little duel.
Either Sea changed sails in the wrong moment or she had a lot of lag there, because she hit the Lighthouse rock and got stopped while Kim sailed around it without problems.

In the meantime Ian increased the distance to Daenery to more than my Drawing Distance of 150m. See the two short before buoy IN.

At buoy ON the duel was still on the same level. Ian and Daenery didnt make a mistake and were still quite close together

While Ian was on full speed on the way South to buoy CN, Kim had to go back because she missed CN at first. She had to wait with her tack until Ian passed her and did that very fair (see the video by Hakiria)

Congrats to Ian for his win.
Congrats to Kim for giving us an wonderful example how to watch dots on minimap, realizing she could not tack before Ian without a hit and waited fair until he passed her.
Congrats to Ian and Daenery for an exciting “staying in front and trying to catch up” duel. If you know what can all can happen with this boat when you do a little mistake you might agree with me that the two had exciting fun in this duel, even if it might have looked quite boring from outside.

  1. “Juicy and Sea crashed and as it seemed by coming too close to a sim cross.”

So, they didn’t crash in an attempt to cross the border, they just came close to it? I remember in 2007/08 we had mid-sim crashes, but this was sorted out quickly. And Lucy reported about almost trouble-free races in SOF, so maybe it’s the waters in the vicinity of St. Aubrey?

Well, look who’s talking; haven’t logged in for weeks now … and don’t feel like but always commenting on you guys struggling. ๐Ÿ˜

    • 1. i havent found out yet why i sometimes dont crash when i sail directly over a cross and why i crash when i think i an far enough away. Its a bit of a miracle.
      2. The size of the boat is quite a factor. The Imocca is much bigger than the shields and it seems to be a cross magnet.
      3. I dont think it is the area, but more the courses in the area and well we have on our courses some dangerous crosses. To watch them is part of the challenge, but i have marked some of the most dangerous ones in our maps.

      • I didn’t care about such technicalities since years but I seem to remember that the chance of survival is better when you cross in a straight 90ยฐ angle. And best not touch anything for at least 20 secs after you hit the border. That was what I learned in the early days on my 384kb connection and nearly 400 ms latency. Every sailing trip was a suicide commando. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  2. This is the first time I just watched the race and didn’t help the RD or RD myself. With five boats and already two RDs I decided to just enjoy it. When Sea hit the light house Amy and I were standing on the dock there and Sea’s boat bounced from the rock into the dock hitting me square on. It knocked me off the dock and into the water. If this had been RL then it would have been RIP Justin!
