Race 9 with TMS-IMocca60-V2.8 at Saint Aubrey

The combined I-Mocca60 race with NYC brought us yesterday back to Saint Aubrey. Daenerys (with crew Selena), Viv, Kim, Larry (with crew Katie), Moon, Sirius (with crew Angelie), Juicy and Ian came for our I-Mocca60 course – 1 and wind from South West with 18knots.
We had some rough Sunday lag and additional local showers: Kim got pulled off her boat quite early, Viv about in the middle of the race and Ian in the last third. All 3 couldnt get back on their boats again unfortunately. Others like Moon and Juicy were a bit more lucky and could get back on their boats after some off sits and they lost “only” lots of time.
All together it was more kind of autumn than spring weather and it took off some of the excitement we saw in the first half of the race.

the fleet waiting for the start

Daenerys and Moon with the best start timing followed by Viv and Ian who was a bit later at the start line but with the best speed. Sirius, Larry, Juicy and Kim followed.

Viv, Ian, Sirius and Larry at the start

Ian used his higher speed to pass Viv, Moon and Daenerys already on the first leg and turned first around buoy OE followed close by Daenerys.
Behind the two leaders Viv, Moon, Larry and Sirius started an exciting upwind duel to buoy CS. Moon chose the route a bit further north and tried to use his starboard tack to buoy CS to slow down Viv, Larry and Sirius. But the three could cross his way close but without loosing speed.
Then followed an even closer tacking duel between Viv and Moon during which Moon managed to pass Viv. But he went a bit too far for the final tack to buoy CS and Viv could pass him on the inside again and started to sail slowly away from Moon on the long upwind to the lighthouse.
Larry followed them close, while Sirius and Juicy lost slowly more and more the contact. Kim unfortunately got pulled off the boat and couldnt get back on it.

Viv, Moon and Larry followed Ian and Daenerys at buoy OE

The long upwind leg to the Lighthouse and the sandy island Ian and Daenerys had a very close duel for the lead.

Ian turned just a bit earlier around the Lighthouse than Daenerys

A bad sim crossing pulled Moon off his boat around Degrand island. He managed to get back on it, but fell back behind Larry.
Larry started his chase for Viv and caught up slowly meter by meter and turned around the Lighthouse only a bit later than Viv.

Viv 3rd at the Lighthouse
Larry 4th at the Lighthouse

Moon, Sirius and Juicy follwed later, but i couldnt wait for them here and had to go back to the duel between Ian and Daenerys. After the sandy island Ian found the faster route to the north and east and sailed away from Daenerys pretty quick. He increased his lead on the following leg fast and looked very safe with it.
Viv and Larry could catch up more and more with Daenerys. At buoy IN Viv was already pretty close behind Daenerys and Larry behind Viv.

Larry close behind Viv after buoy IN

Shortly after this Viv got stopped by sl on a crossing and couldnt get back on her boat fast enough to continue.
Ian still far in the lead looked like the winner of this race. But on his way to Degrand island for the second time SL disconnected him and he couldnt get back on his boat fast enough.
Daenerys took the lead now followed by Larry who caught up with her slowly.
Behind them Moon and Sirius followed with some safe distance. Juicy got pulled off his boat twice and fought the lag and technical sl challenges bravely at the end of the fleet.

Fortunately this were all bad news until the remaining sailors finished one after another.

Daenerys finished first
Larry finished second
Moon finished third
Sirius finsihed fourth

Adeli and i looked for Juicy on the course and we could see only somewhere his boat and thought he crashed. But we caught a moment he was just pulled off his boat and trying to get back on it.
Adeli and i agreed to join the the sailors and spectators for the after race beer.
All were talking about the different situations in the race, the exciting duels and the bad luck some had while we enjoyed the cold fresh “Ironess”.
Suddenly nearly unnoticed of all the brave fighting Juicy finished and i am very sorry Juicy i missed your finish picture.

  1. “Then followed an even closer tacking duel between Viv and Moon during which Moon managed to pass Viv.”
The correct comment should be: “Moon on port tack, failed to keep clear of Viv, approaching on starboard, and tacked in front of her, so close there was contact…” My bow actually got partially stuck on top of Moon’s stern as I could not avoid contact despite my best try to luff up.
I knew I would pull ahead of him anyway, so I didn’t protest. My boat was already quite ruffled after a similar encounter with Larry’s boat a few minutes before as I was well established on my starboard tack, but he too reacted late to duck behind me. At least, he tried to avoid me. Again, this is anecdotal since LL didn’t let me finish the race anyway.
It was a fine and fun first half of race, Thanks !

    • Viv,
from my point up in the air i couldnt see the contact with Moon and yes it really looked very “Moon kind lately” close.
I think it was for him a combination of his low DD and the few experience with the turning speed of the IMocca60. He had to tack or would have rammed you, he did just too late.
This cant be an excuse, but maybe an explanation.

If the action with Larry was before the first buoy OE then be sure he moored on his own there and did his penalty there. I saw him mooring and asked myself why.

  2. I know, I didn’t protest either… as I said, this is all anecdotal. I sail for fun, and I love reading your comments. So much so that I cannot help commenting too ;).
Thanks again for bringing some life in SL sailing !!

    • It’s almost a little bit like in the old times when we still had a forum. 😉 We can’t thank Bia and Lucy enough for not only doing the races but for the reports. This is what always made the SL Sailing Community better than all the other communities. We talk,we comunicate, we fight, we colaborate, we’re a community. In that regard I’m very happy about the shared I-Mocca Saturday races between NYC and St. Aubrey.

      … it’s also good for my blog’s statistics I assume. 😉
