Race Day 15B with Bandit 22LTE at Saint Aubrey

No restarts around us and no BBX yachts in the way yesterday. Lisa, Viv, Reni, Nicci, Erin, Ella, Amy, Lucy, Moon, Rugger and Cilian came to race our reversed course with wind again from South West and 21knots.

I got disconnected in the middle of the race following the fleet, Rugger lost his boat a little later while close behind Lisa in second place and Cilian gave up after 3 relogs. So we had some local rain showers with rest of sunny weather.

the fleet before the start (Viv came right before the start and is missing on this picture)

Nicci and Reni had the best start followed by 7 sailors within 11sec. Only Amy and Cilian started slower.

the start

Lisa and Amy made the best first leg. Lisa passed Rugger and Nicci and caught up with Reni and Amy caught up with Erin.

On the downwind leg to buoy CN Lisa and Rugger passed Reni and Moon passed Viv.

Lisa leading at buoy IS followed close by Rugger
Moon chasing Nicci and behind them Ella, Reni, Viv, Lucy and Erin close lined up
Amy followed all a bit later

I got disconnected at the next buoy and missed quite a bit of the next two fast legs. Shortly after i reached the fleet again Rugger lost his boat still close behind Lisa. That gave Lisa quite a relaxed lead which she saved until the finishline.

Erin could turn around buoy ON a little before Ella, Amy and Lucy.

poor Cilian far behind all others after his several relogs

On the next 2 legs Ella, Amy and Lucy could caught up with Erin and now there were 4 in the battle to the finish.

the exciting battle at the end of the fleet

On the second last leg Viv could pass Reni in a nice upwind duel and Reni tried all to strike back

2. Moon

Reni tried hard, but she couldnt catch Viv again on the last leg

3. Viv
4. Reni
5. Nicci

Erin could sail just a couple of seconds away again from Ella, Amy and Lucy.

6. Erin

While Erin’s picture was uploading Ella (7.), Amy (8.) and Lucy (9.) finished in an exciting fotofinish, but unfortunately too fast for my internet. So i am very sorry girls, but i missed your picture.

The race was as exciting as the one last week, but this time without the fleet crash and with a happy end for 9 out of 11. Lots of awesome duels and position changes made it a really awesome race.
Congrats to Lisa for her win and to all others for their awesome, fair and exciting racing.

  1. “unfortunately too fast for my internet.”

Didn’t mommy Merkel promise broadband rollout will be finished by 2018? What’s up with that in Europe’s leading tech nation? 😦

  2. Thanks for the fun and successful race.
Again, it was an instructive one for me, on a tactical point of view.
First, I should really pay more attention to the charts before taking the start, lol: I had the regular course in mind instead of the “reversed’ so I planned the 1st mark wrong. Anyway, I wouldn’t have made much difference as I timed my start poorly and ended locked behind Ruggero at the windward end of the line. No room to pass him upwind, do I tried leeward, switching to the code0 for extra speed despite windshadow… It didn’t work well, as I had to keep clear from the rest of the fleet to my lee. I eventually lost some speed and so Moon and Lucy could pass me at the mark (maybe others). I should’ve stayed safely behind Ruggero.
Later, I managed to pull the same trick more successfully to pass a couple boats on the upwind leg to 3rd mark. I was then in good position to chase Nicci and Reni.
I passed Nicci on the run, staying to windward of her on the reach in Repaci. I managed to close the gap little with Reni and Moon by sailing a very direct route on the run to the mark at Coull, and then focused on shortening my route to the last 2 marks upwind. that worked out well as I managed to get in contention not only with Reni, but also with Moon.
However. being in Moon windshadow, I had to make a choice: I opted to tack to get clear. With retrospect, I think that it was a mistake: The 2 extra tacks gave Moon too much leeway and I ended having to fight hard to keep ahead of Reni, after tacking in front of her. I managed to sail closer to the wind while maintaining enough speed to fend her off, but it was extremely tight (she almost got a overlap to my windward: had she succeed she would have been able to windshadow me).
Anyway, great fun trying stuff, taking different options, sometimes with success and sometimes not. Cheers!

      • Typos are no problem and to be expected. But, honestly, don’t you get the grey EDIT box under your name, close to your posting date and time? I always use it to correctify my erratic typing. But maybe that’s just for me since I’m kinda big deal around here. =^.^=

    • The course with the different winds gives everyone many options to try different things in duels. The length of the course gives additional some time to fix a mistake, if you just dont do it at the last buoy before finish.

I saw specially on the long upwind legs in last weeks a lot of different routes. The fleet spreads wide and its interesting in what order they come to turn around next buoy.
