A new forum?

As discussed in https://orcaflotta.blog/2018/11/09/virtual-world-sailing-forum/, I started to search for good free forum hosting in the web. Found some lists of best free hosting, aged 1 year or less… Well, even being recent lists, about half of them are not online anymore (this is a danger that we must take in account).

From my search I reached the following places:

ProBoard: https://www.proboards.com
Forumotion: https://www.forumotion.com/
Nabble: https://nabble.com/
Boardhost: https://boardhost.com/features.html
Create a Forum: https://www.createaforum.com/
SMF New: https://www.smfnew.com/

From those I only know ProBoard, that have a calendar in, but is not a good one.

Serena was also trying to set an emergency forum, while Analyse is trying to get the old VWS forum, but not much optimism on this ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I will now invite some people ti discuss this here, and feel free to invite anyone you think are interested in this issue.

Xoxo, Lucy

  1. Cool! Thank you Lucy. Why not trying the well-known forum systems, phpBB, Joomla!, MyBB, Simple Machines or Drupal?

Oh, and hey, I’ll add a photo so the title page won’t be empty for this post. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Looking more into the hosts about backups.

Couldn’t find a way to backup the forum in ProBoards or in Board Host. This means that if the service goes down, we will loose all the forum, as already happened with the old forums. Many usefull messages about building and scripting are now lost (Ana is trying to at least recover the messages from VWS)
BoardHost have a 2,500 messages cap. When this limit is reached, old messages are deleted (and lost).

Forummotion, Nabble and Createaforum allow backups, and SMF have paid backup.

I think this is an important point for a forum.

  3. I made a test forum in Forumotion, but it have only an internal backup system, updated daily, couldn’t find a way to download a copy of messages in order to not lose them in case of change of host service or losing of the forum as a whole.

It have a calendar, but it shows only a list of events by day, show time only when hovering the event:

    Adress: http://slsailing.forumeiros.com/

P.S. And the calendar don’t have a recusive event (e.g. every monday, or daily during a week)

  4. Mark just inspired me to hatch an idea: It’s not elegant and flexible but why not use the actual WordPress blog as a forum? For every new topic you start with a “blogstory” and the discussion then happens down below in the comment section. Like this here now.
    What?
    Okayokay … I’m showing myself out …

  5. The question is how do you moderate the exchanges?
Is a user able to delete or edit her comments here? (it seems NOT)
Can there be several admins for 1 blog?
How many blog contributors can there be?

    • Orca said, “Mark just inspired me to hatch an idea”. Shutter, to think I caused Orca to hatch anything is scary, Grin,

MTW says: actually my point would be to point out how unsuitable WordPress Forum would be to meet the needs.

  6. As a WP blog owner I can attest to the unbelievable powers one has. I can invite many many co-, guest- or whatever bloggers. In this one it’s of course Lucy, then Trap and some others who never post anything. I can give them various degrees of powers too. So a “forum” here would be easy to moderate but also very easy to to manipulate. :/

As already stated I kick myself in the sexy ass for the stupid idea of a blog forum. Shame on me. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

MTW: So, Orca, Are you REALLY trying to follow in the footsteps of Donald Trump and his effort to manipulate people via his Fake Media empire. GRIN.

    • i think I made a mistake. Is it normal to not allow those commenting to edit their mistakes so that an evil-doer
cannot spew forth lies like Donald Trump, then go back and edit the lies so that he can say “I NEVER SAID THAT”? Makes sense in a perverse way.

    • I can do it easily, since as a content provider I have a big fat EDIT button above every comment … and careful now, even above yours! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ That’s why I kicked my own ass and don’t think it’s a good idea anymore. Dunno how it looks on your side. I hope you don’t have the powers to abuse my bloggo. It’s bad enuff that I shall have ’em.

See how easy it is to do really evil things? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

What you think you know is shit! Always was and obviously still is.
It’s not my fault we europeans are mostly not as sloppy with definitions as americans and don’t try to fuk each other over the head with false politeness.

But yes, I could put words in your mouth, once one of my associated blog contributors even did it, she falsified my blog by deleting a comment from a reader she didn’t like. Consequently I kicked her out. Apart from that unfortunate incident there is no moderation, no blocking, no censoring going on in this blog. It’s rough and raw as we like it!
