Shields@Noon – April 21st, 2018

SL wasn’t fair to Paul as he lost steering in both races when was in 1st place. While in first one he regained boat control later, in second he couldn’t finish.

Welcome back Wippy.

  1. Fascinating fact of the day:

Did y’all know that the O2 course is an abbreviation for Orca 2? Mhm, it was yours truly who invented this fancy and scenic route. That was in the dark ages, uh, happy days, when TrYC was just a fledgeling sailing club and Charlz & Fi were looking for a commodore and thought that loudmouth Orca was perfect for the role. Of course I told them no. I’ll never be your commodore, it’s too militaristic for me. But you can have a Manager or a High Cheese. So High Cheese it was, and as High Cheese I went to work and made some race courses, as did Charlz and later also Hannelore (who was the bestest chartmaker). Their courses are the aptly named C and H courses, as you might have guessed by now.

We made courses, short and long, around buoys and natural obstacles, traditional Olympic triangles and competitive cruising courses, and time trials, as far as to Dire Strait’s Fedallah line, and Plum Gut in Sailors Cove.

And we were just one of many clubs. Every day you had a whole menu of various races in all boat classes to chose from. We even made a community wide calendar to avoid more than one event at the same time. Oh there was a lot of jealousy and infighting going on in the sailing club scene of SL.

Nowadays it’s just TrYC’s powerhouse, the fancy Lucy herself, and NYC who are still having an active racing schedule, right?

Plus of course the indestructable LCC and TYC with their respective cruises. Dunno if the Rainbows are still doing their topless cruises or who else does stuff for the sailing community.

Anyhoo, that was an interesting travel back in time, no? I’m suddenly feeling sooo nostalgic. Am I getting old?
